Situé sur les grands boulevards parisiens, le musée Grévin immortalise depuis plus d’un siècle les plus grandes personnalités du monde et de l’histoire.
Ce musée unique en son genre lors de sa création fut créé en 1882 par Alfred Meyer, un journaliste fondateur du célèbre quotidien Le Gaulois. Il voulait présenter aux visiteurs les célébrités dont on parlait régulièrement dans son journal, en trois dimensions. A cette époque, la photographie était encore très peu utilisée pour illustrer les articles de presse, cela permettrait alors au public de « mettre un visage » sur ces célébrités.
Alfred Meyer demande alors l’aide d’Alfred Grévin, créateur de costumes de théâtre et sculpteur. Tous deux créent des mannequins de cire, statiques, qui ressemblent énormément aux célébrités. Alfred Grévin donna son nom au musée qui ouvrit ses portes le 5 juin 1882. Ce fut très rapidement un succès.
Dans les années qui suivirent, le musée se développa rapidement et il s’enrichit avec des décors de nouvelles statues de cire ainsi que le Théâtre Grévin classé Monument Historique.
A présent, le Musée Grévin compte plus de 450 statues représentant les personnalités du cinéma, de l’Art, des personnalités historiques et d’autres venants du monde du sport.
Depuis le 19 avril 2013, le musée Grévin s’exporte à l’international, il s’est installé à Montréal. 120 personnalités y sont déjà représentées dans des décors aux atmosphères originales.
Un deuxième musée Grévin ouvrira ses portes à l'étranger, au 1er trimestre 2014 : Grévin Prague.
