Présentation: Le musée présente un panorama de l'architecture, de la sculpture et de la peinture en France à travers plus de 6000 moulages grandeur nature et 5000 m² de relevés de peintures murales du Moyen-Âge à la Renaissance. Le programme de restructuration s'oriente vers un musée d'histoire de l'architecture et un centre pour le patrimoine monumental et urbain. |
Architecture: Le musée occupe depuis 1937 la majeure partie de l'aile Paris du palais de Chaillot. Il remplace le musée de sculpture comparée créé en 1882 à l'initiative de l'architecte Viollet-le-Duc dans le palais du Trocadéro construit pour l'Exposition Universelle de 1879. La reconstruction du bâtiment à l'occasion de l'Exposition Universelle de 1937 permit l'agrandissement des locaux du musée et le développement de nouvelles sections concernant l'art monumental.
Principaux atouts: Les collections d'architecture et de sculpture commencent avec la France pré-romane (Jouarre, St-Genis-des-Fontaines) et romane (Saint-Sernin à Toulouse, Moissac, Conques, Aulnay, Autun, Sainte-Marie-des-Dames à Saintes, la cathédrale d'Angoulême, Saint-Gilles-du-Gard, Saint-Trophime d'Arles, Cluny, Notre-Dame du Port à Clermont-Ferrand). Art gothique du XIIe, sculptures des XVe, XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles. Les salles consacrées à la peinture murale s'étendent sur trois niveaux. Les 2 000 relevés d'oeuvres demeurées sur place ou maintenant effacées sont présentées par aires géographiques ou unités d'ensembles.
