Trois cent mètres de haut la symbolisent dans le monde entier. Sa construction fut décidée pour célébrer l’Exposition Universelle de 1889. Vingt et un mois furent nécessaires à Gustave Eiffel accompagné de cinquante ingénieurs et cent trente deux ouvriers pour le montage de 18 000 pièces de fer. Sa durée de vie était établie à vingt années. Or, la Science la préserva : Gustave Eiffel encouragea les recherches sur les transmissions radio en proposant d’utiliser la tour comme antenne.
Si elle a inspiré des poètes avant-gardistes comme Apollinaire, beaucoup d’artistes la décrièrent lors de sa mise en chantier. Pourtant, la « grande dame » n’en a pas moins reçu, en un siècle, plus de vingt millions de visiteurs. A leur instar, profitez d’une belle journée pour monter à pied, selon votre rythme, jusqu’au premier ou deuxième étage, et prenez l’ascenseur jusqu’au troisième pour apprécier le panorama qui s’impose à vous.
